In Fremont this is short 1 mile State Highway connecting I-880 east to I-680 known as California State Route 262. CA 262 is something of an oddity given it is sparsely signed and now exists essentially as a connector route between I-880 and I-680 on Mission Boulevard.  CA 262 partially is a freeway east of it's junction with I-880 near to Warm Springs Boulevard.  This small segment of freeway on CA 262 was once the temporary northern end of the Nimitz Freeway when CA 17 (pre-1964 Legislative Route Number) was routed over it circa 1954-1955 to Warm Springs Boulevard. 1954 State Highway Map  1955 State Highway Map East of Warm Springs Boulevard CA 262 to I-680 exists on a former segment of LRN 5 on Mission Boulevard.  This particular segment of CA 262/Mission Boulevard was once part of US Route 48 between 1926 through 1929.  CA 262/Mission Boulevard east of Warm Springs Boulevard became part of US 101E from 1929 likely to 1935.  At least by 1940 CA...

How does one make an otherwise unremarkable stretch of State Highway the absolute bane of the road community?  Make a small portion of said State Highway into a Interstate Highway but one that retains it's completely out of grid State Highway number.  One such route does exist; California State Route 238 and it's better known segment Interstate 238. CA 238/I-238 (I'll be referring to this highway frequently as Highway 238 for simplicity) including a relinquished segment in Hayward is a 16 mile "highway" starting at I-680 in Fremont which heads northwest to I-880 in San Leandro.  Only an approximately 2.1 mile segment of Highway 238 between I-580 and I-880 is part of the Interstate system. After finishing the Goat Trail section of California State Route 35 I took California State Route 17 back to the north terminus of California State Route 9 in Los Gatos.  My next route of travel was on the entirety of California State Route 9 southwest to Santa Cruz. California State Route 9 ("CA 9") is an approximately 39 mile State Highway in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  CA 9 has a north terminus at CA 17 in Los Gatos of Santa Clara County.  The south terminus of CA 9 can be found at at CA 1 in Santa Cruz of Santa Cruz County.  CA 9 is generally considered to be one of the more scenic state highways given the terrain it covers in the Redwood strewn Santa Cruz Mountains.  The alignment of CA 9 has shifted numerous times over the years but largely has been the same since 1964.
